In The Midst Of It All

Talk about nightmare in New York City. Devastation swept across the city that never
sleeps after millions of residents were left to clean up the damage “Superstorm
Sandy” left behind. During the night of
the storm I slept peacefully on the Upper East Side as slight wind and rain
tapped my window. The next morning to my
surprise NY appeared to be a war zone in which Sandy went ramped and tore the
entire city apart.

Sandy has claimed at least 37 lives in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters of CNN earlier today.

Lauren Abraham, 23, was killed Monday outside her Jamaica, Queens, home in New York when she stepped on a downed electrical line in a puddle, police said.

The body of 13-year-old Andrea Dresch was pulled from the debris of a house in New York’s Staten Island that was swallowed by a tidal surge when Sandy swept ashore.

In the Staten Island neighborhood of Great Hills, John Filipowicz, 51, and his 20-year-old son John were found dead after being buried under debris in the basement of their home after it was swamped by the storm surge.

 

After a promise made by Obama that the federal government “will not quit”, communities all over New York continue to seek help in restoring and rebuilding after the damage of Sandy.

“We are not going to tolerate red tape, we are not going to tolerate bureaucracy,” Obama said. “And I’ve instituted a 15-minute rule, essentially, on my team. You return everybody’s phone calls in 15 minutes, whether it’s the mayor’s, the governor’s, county officials’.”

Not only was Manhattan effected from Sassy Sandy but residents in the Breezy Point neighborhood of Queens witnessed extreme damage as well when over 80 homes were lost due to a large blaze after an electric line caught fire ashore. After leaving millions of people without electricity, tons of trees and electrical cords covering the sidewalks and streets, taking the lives of more than 30 people, the city was left desolate and hopeless.

Needless to say, the 900-mile-wide monster came with more than a roar Monday night as she swept and destroyed the city of New York. Fortunate enough, I as well as the other kiddos of MIM were safe during the night of the storm. However, my heart yearns for the victims of this tragic disaster. As I left my residence for the first time in two days, the city appeared to be recovering. The roads were dense, full of cars and taxis trying to restore their daily lives. The sidewalks were filled with little kids dressed in their Halloween costumes trying to keep spirits high despite the aftermath of the storm. For now, the city will continue to mend and repair what they call home. In the future, this mother-nature destruction will grow as a threat to the killer weather ahead of us.
